Maryland’s Congressional delegation consists of 2 senators and 8 representatives, all of whom are Democrats except for one. We present basic information about each below.

Senators

Ben Cardin (D) is the senior United States Senator from Maryland, first elected to that seat in 2006. In 2015, Cardin became the ranking Democratic member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Christopher Van Hollen Jr. (D) has served as junior Senator from Maryland since January 3, 2017. He is the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee and also sits on the Appropriations Committee.

Representatives

Andrew Harris(R, MD-01) has served in Congress since 2011. Harris, the only Republican member of the MD delegation, is a member of the Republican Israel Caucus and the “Freedom Caucus.”

Dutch Ruppersberger (D, MD-02) was elected to Congress in 2003. Currently, he serves on the Subcommittee on Defense and the Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs of the Appropriations Committee.

John Sarbanes (D, MD-03) has served as Congressman since 2007. His district is the third most gerrymandered district in the U.S. Rep. Sarbanes serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and on Oversight and Reform.

Glen Ivey (D, MD-04) was elected to Congress in 2022 and sworn in on Jan. 7, 2023.

Steny Hoyer (D, MD-05) has served in the House of Representatives since 1981 and as House Majority Leader from 2019 until 2023. Rep. Hoyer was the second ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives until 2023.

David Trone (D, MD-06) was elected in 2019 to a district that includes most of the western third of the state, although the bulk of its population is located in Montgomery County. Rep. Trone serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Kweisi Mfume (D, MD-07) served five terms as a Democratic Congressman from Maryland’s 7th congressional district, serving in the 100th through 104th Congresses. On February 4, 2020, Mr. Mfume won the Democratic nomination for his former seat in a MD-7 special election following the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings and then won the seat for the rest of Rep. Cummings’ term in the general election held on April 28, 2020.

Jamie Raskin (D, MD-08) was elected to Congress in 2018, He serves on the House Judiciary Committee, the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
